Hardwood is available in two different constructions: solid and engineered. Solid hardwood is considered the original because it is made from a genuine strip of real wood and nothing else. There is no special layered construction. As a result, solid hardwood planks are thick and strong. In addition, because solid hardwood planks have uniform constructions, they can be refinished multiple times. Hardwood refinishing is a great way to remove any wear and tear from your hardwood floor’s surface.
Engineered hardwood, unlike solid hardwood, does not have a uniform construction. Rather, it is made from three to seven layers of real wood. These layers are cross-directionally pressed together, and this is important because the wood grains on each layer run in different directions. This counteracts wood’s natural tendency to expand, so engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood. This extra stability means that engineered hardwood is suitable for on, above, and below ground settings, and it also can better-handle moisture and humidity.
Although solid and engineered hardwood feature different constructions, they both look exactly the same.
